Help from the Gods
Hey all,
So this post is all about those great unsung heros of the CSM 'Dex, the Lesser Demons. I know a lot of players don't take them because they are not viewed as competitive. There are a few that take them, say in squads of 6, but they aren't a major part of the force. Often being relegated to the "I have X amount of points left, I could get some demons" type of thought. Then there is someone like me, I play a Word Bearer themed army and demons are a major component of that army.
Now, let's look at the positives...
13 points each, this is the cheapest scoring unit in the CSM 'Dex.
They have the same stat line as regular Chaos Space Marine, and have better leadership at Ld 10.
5+ invulnerable save, it gives them great survivability.
Deep Strike with NO scatter off of the Icon.
Assaulting after Deep Striking.
Fearless, ignoring morale checks can be awesome.
The magic number for squad size seems to be 8, bigger is ok but not necessary and smaller is just too fragile and easily wiped out.
For a good points cost, you get a lot. However they do have some drawbacks as well.
The negatives...
Deep Strike/Summoning, you need to have an Icon on the board or bye bye unit.
Because they are in reserves they may not show up at an ideal time, however I have played games where my Greater Demon and 3 units of Lessers didn't show up till about turn 4, demon tide for the win... no really.
5+ Invulnerable save is good, but not so good it makes Lessers mandatory for most.
They WILL fold when confronted with a CC specialist unit. Now this one you can take with a grain of salt, I did have them fold before. I have also had them wipe out units with good dice rolls.
Some ways of delivery... any way you get Lessers on the board ALWAYS requires an Icon. Squad or personal, don't forget to take them! I recently redid my list and changed my HQ around an forgot to give him an Icon... until I rolled for Reserves that is. Durp.
The Demon Bomb - Usually this involves bikers with an Icon, Turbo Boosting across the board to deliver your demons into the enemy. This was practiced with the last CSM 'Dex but has since fallen out of favor. Usually as soon as your opponent sees bikes and demons the bikes become a target priority.
Rolling - This is with your an Icon, in a Rhino or Land Raider, rolling along popping out Demons. The benefit here is being able to measure the distance from the Rhino/Land Raider hull, often this will put you into assault range after placing your models as per the Deep Strike rules. Again 8 Lessers here seem to be the magic number, that will allow at least one full ring around center model allowing you to start the next ring closest to the enemy.
Using Lesser Demons comes down to personal preference. I use them heavily, and in a Word Bearers list they fit. They have worked wonders for me tying up more expensive units, or actually killing everything they touch. To me, the ability to assault after Deep Strike is an amazing mechanic and has performed well for me. What do you guys think? Are the Demons in CSM worth the points for what they do? I know they aren't like they used to be... but this isn't about what was. They perform as well as the dice allow and sometimes that is amazing.

GamesDay 2010... at home.
Hey all,
So going to GamesDay in Baltimore was a no go for me. No problem. My buddy Dave and I made our GamesDay here. He got to field his Necrons, he'd been working on them but didn't have a chance to play them yet, and make some tweaks to his list of what works and what doesn't. I got to paint some Lesser Demons, I think I got them figured out finally, and reaffirm my love for AC turret Preds with Lascannon sponsons.
All in all we played 5 games, at different points levels, over the weekend. It was a total win. Not only that we went to FLGS here in Columbus called The Guardtower. Fantastic store, they carry just about everything... GW, Hordes, FoW, Magic, D&D(and several other RPGs that I haven't even heard of), Micro Art resin bases, Battlefield in Box from GF9, they just have tons of stuff. They even have a store wide discount based on how much you buy, you buy more.. you get a bigger discount. This was our shopping part of our GamesDay at home, and I picked up the new Demon Prince from GW, and can't wait to get started on it.
It was a great time to be had, and I think it was even better than going to GamesDay proper. No fees outside of some gas for the car and lunch. I'm sure most of you can schedule this sort thing on a more regular basis, for Dave and I though this is like a mini vacation and even though we were stuck in town it was still a great time. What about you guys? Have you planned for an event such as GameDay only to have it fall through and then made the most of the time you had set aside? Lemme know. :-)

FREE GAMESDAY TIX
Yup, you read it right. I cannot attend this years GamesDay because of 1. I've had several family health issues pop up over the recent months and haven't had a lot of time to finish my army 2. The buddy I was going with has his own health problems as well, his first full chemo dose is scheduled for that Saturday and 3. my step-son mulled it over and decided not to go.
So, that means I have 2 tickets for Baltimore GamesDay that I am more than willing to part with. My contact info is in the right side of the blog, make sure to put "gamesday tix" in the subject line or it won't get opened. I need all relevant information to send the tickets to you, for free, yes you read it right again for free. Please, please make sure you get your info to me no later than this Saturday the 14th. Also keep snail mail time in mind, I will send them out but I'm not going to overnight them unless you pay for it.
The ONLY stipulation I have, there's always fine print right?, is that you take your best bud, your wife, your kid, someone to have a great time with to meet some great people, bloggers, and make some awesome gaming memories. And, if you happen to wonder is at GamesDay this year here's a link to find out more info...
Hopefully I'll talk to some of you soon.

Finally going forward...
Hey gang,
First off, let me thank those of you that have decided to follow this blog. No this is not a "I'm leaving the game blah, blah, blah..." type of thing. I did get into grad school and that starts the 27th of this month, so that will mean my posts here will even more spread apart. I am an artist by trade and here is the website if you all want to take a look...
my stuff...
It may not be readily apparent, but the modeling aspect of gaming has helped out with making some of my art. Techniques from pinning, glazing, glueing, and basing; have given me an understanding of combing unlike materials to form a cohesive whole and being able to hide those joins successfully.
Ok, now for some fun... sorta... I cannot attend the Baltimore GamesDay this year. But that means I have 2 tickets that are up for grabs, all I need is an address to send them to. Please think about snail mail time, I will send them out, but I'm not going to overnight them! I will need an address by the end of this week, Saturday the 14th of August at the latest. Please put "gamesday tix" in the subject line or you will be deleted, and don't forget to include all info required to get the tickets to you!! Since I was planning on going with a good friend, you should be doing the same... or taking your kid, or your wife, somebody to have a blast with... share the hobby, expand it for you and them... and you better hurry, the hotels are filling up REAL fast.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Chris(a.k.a. Grim)
